So, the other day at drivers ed, we were discussing drinking and driving. SubhanaAllah, the rates are so high, its unbelievable. We watched videos of how the victims are and the way the act, having no clue what they are saying.
Then, our instructor gave us these goggles, and through them you see through the eyes of a drunk person. What he asked us to do was wear them and walk ‘straight’. No one was able to, one guy actually fell. It was funny at that moment but to think people are actually in that state was so scary.
At prayer today, the imam recited these ayahs, and I really began to think about the meaning.
1. O mankind! Fear your Lord and be dutiful to Him! Verily, the earthquake of the Hour (of Judgement) is a terrible thing.
2. The Day you shall see it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling, and every pregnant one will drop her load, and you shall see mankind as in a drunken state, yet they will not be drunken, but severe will be the Torment of Allâh.
I felt that i could really relate to this ayah. Never did i get drunk (alhamduliah) but just the moment i put those goggles on, and it was just so horrifying. My friend even put her hand out for a hi5 and i missed. That is how bad it is. It is truly a torment form Allah, being in that state, is just so disgusting.
The thing is, people suffer in this life and in the hereafter. I heard many incidents on how people act when they are drunk. People we come to respect and know for the ‘smart’ kids at school, but really they aren’t. A lot of people ask ‘why aren’t muslims allowed to drink and have fun?’ just think about the wisdom of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala! the affects that beer/wine or whatever has on a person is so severe its sad, and that is why it is prohibited. It leaves a person in such a degrading state.
But what it is even more scary is that this is an ever lasting torment. If in this life we see the effects on how the people act and we realize it is truly ‘3athaab from Allah, how will it be on the day of judgment? People on that day will be in the state of drunkness, not due to wine though, but due to fear from Allah.
Another thing i started thinking about is if people cannot walk straight in this life, whats their plan when they reach the siraat almustaqeem!?
